Co-sponsored by the Klamath Bird Observatory Award-winning 14-year media veteran Mike Green, 47, and freelance writer Jennifer Margulis, 40, shared expert knowledge with Rogue Valley businesses and nonprofits to foster a better understanding of the needs of local media. “It’s frustrating when someone comes to you with a story idea but has no idea how to make that idea compelling, how to give an interview, or how to make information accessible to a journalist,” Margulis said. Margulis said there are basic public relations strategies that every business and PR person needs to know, but many do not. “So much time, money, and energy is wasted because businesses don’t have basic training,” Margulis said. |

| Thursday May 21st 7:30 pm Cindy Sheehan, author of Not One More Mother's Child and Peace Mom Where: Bloomsbury Books, 290 E Main Street, Ashland, Oregon; (541) 488-0029 Cindy Sheehan began her anti-war activism after her oldest son, Casey, was killed in Iraq on 04/04/04. She rose to international prominence when she camped on the literal doorstep of George Bush's Crawford Ranch in August 2005. In addition to being nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005, she has received dozens of peace awards from all over the world and has published three books: Not One More Mother's Child; Dear President Bush; and Peace Mom: A Mother's Journey Through Heartache to Activism. This was an amazing event. Cindy Sheehan is a passionate and articulate speaker who is not afraid to voice radical ideas. She's original, funny, and compassionate. She calls herself a humanist and believes that all Americans need to stop buying into the myths we are being told by the "robber class" -- the people in power who live off the hard work and sweat of the rest of us. ![]() Among the many wise and fascinating things she said was that we need to start changing society by changing ourselves. She suggests NOT using credit cards so that our money no longer goes to the banking system; shopping locally instead of at big box retail outlets; walking instead of driving (she herself does not own a car) in order to no longer use fossil fuels and destroy the environment; and joining a food co-op instead of shopping at brand name supermarkets. If you ever have a chance to hear her speak, go! She's totally inspiring. |
Wednesday, May 6, 2009 Sean Bagshaw, one of Oregon's premier outdoor photographers and a speaker at the event, says that, "Crater Lake is unique and offers me artistic photography opportunities that can't be found anywhere else…exploration, adventure and wonder are always a part of my experience when visiting Crater Lake." The other scheduled speaker was potter Jim Robinson. The eruption of Mt. Mazama over 7,000 years ago created Crater Lake, and Mr. Robinson uses ash from that ancient eruption to craft unique glazes for his work. “I am inspired by the power, history, and natural beauty inherent in this raw material,” he says. |
